Review: ONZA IBEX 27.5-2.4 INCH
2nd September 2019 [Reviewer: Steve Read]
Price at time: £50ish
"The IBEX (or Capricorn) is known for fast, smooth and safe locomotion in mountaineous terrain, and the tire named after it is no different: Thanks to its wide open tread, you do not need to compromise on either loose gravel or in wet conditions. No trail is too steep, no section too narrow and no root too slippery for this all round tire."
I would not usually run a tyre I've never used just before a race, but after 3 weeks off the bike due to a family loss I decided to wack them on (what's the worst that can happen!).
Swinley Forest is mainly hardpack dusty and loose in the dry. After speaking to a fellow Enduro Rider (and an all around legend) Ben Deacon I thought I'd give this Onza tyre a run out as a rear tyre with the aim to run the 'full on beast tyre' the 'Aquila' on the front (not yet arrived).
First impressions tubeless? Well I struggled to actually get the tyre on the rim!!
Whether it was the cold garage and late night or me being tired from work it was a real struggle! But once on it blasted up tubeless in one go, and was pumped up to full volume to allow stretch overnight.
In the morning I let down to my usual pressure of 27psi and it's a true 2.4.
Note: In my experience, so many brands come up small but this tyre is refreshingly bang on.
It was worth the struggle getting this tyre on!! I really like the tread extending far around the width of the tyre with aggressive knobs that really dig in. You can be confident to lean this tyre over and not worry about slippage... and as a bonus, it has very fast rolling speed.
This extra speed was welcome on the dry trails, and my first run down trail red 15 resulted in a 1.09 which was my Personal Best down this high speed run!
I'm yet to see how it fairs in the slop and mud, and braking traction is not a great as a DHR2 but that is offset by being very fast rolling with epic great cornering grip! Think me and this tyre are going to get along and I look forward to see how it fairs through winter.
So far so impressed with the Onza's- I have ordered, and cannot wait for the Aquila to arrive for the front!
Overall score 5/5
Fast Rolling Speed, Great Cornering.
Breaking ability. Wet Performance.
